Our Vision

Pioneer Mall was identified as the optimal location for the gallery, given its high foot traffic, which provides artists with maximum exposure. After being introduced to specialists in the art field, we recognized that establishing a gallery alone would not be sufficient. To create a sustainable industry for artists, strategic partnerships are essential.

The initiative is structured to ensure long-term sustainability, with strategic partnerships forming the backbone of its success:

Moruo Developments Ltd:

Led the development and operational management of the Meshu Art Gallery.

Limkokwing University: Establishing a Print-Making Education Facility in Maseru to train the next generation of artists.

Artist Proof Studio: A leading printmaking institute providing expertise in production, education, and international art sales.

LESOTHO'S ART INDUSTRY IS ENTERING A NEW ERA

—one that promises growth, recognition, and sustainability for its creative talents. Through innovative collaborations and a commitment to nurturing artistic potential, the Meshu Art Gallery is set to become a cultural landmark, developing entrepreneurship through the seven year plan to develop the arts industry.

THE ECONOMICS OF ART

After an introduction to Kim Berman a partnership was established with Artist Proof Studio (APS) in Johannesburg. This partnership allows for the featuring of high-quality prints, allowing artists to monetize their work through international e-commerce platforms and corporate procurement opportunities.

THE STRATEGY

While the MESHU ART GALLERY is the focal point, it is part of a much broader strategy to cultivate an entire supply chain for Lesotho’s arts industry. This initiative will empower artists, create jobs, and develop a sustainable economic sector rooted in creativity.

The Meshu Art Gallery is the platform with which the local artist can gain international exposure, but that alone is not enough to sustain the development of the art industry. A partnership with Limkokwing University is established to develop screen printing in their curriculum, mirroring the course offerred at Artist Proof Studio, therefore local residents can learn the skills required to make screen prints. Limkokwing University has established a screen printing facility where local artists can have their art printed and create opportunities for building their portfolio, which  will generate continuous revenue.

Two graduates turned educators from Artist Proof Studio are employed by Limkokwing University as screen printing educators . Three local students are under training at Artist Proof Studio (APS) for a period of Four Years, after-which the graduates will be employed by Limkowking University as educators.

Standard Lesotho Bank is supporting this initiative.

How It All Started

During the grand 60th birthday celebration of His Majesty King Letsie III in 2023 an extraordinary exhibition of art illuminated the occasion.

This event, which displayed the profound talents of local artists, was a testament to their remarkable abilities and creativity.

It became evident that these gifted individuals were hampered by a lack of resources and platforms to present their work to a broader audience, both domestically and internationally.

Despite their undeniable skills, the artists of Lesotho find it challenging to reap the benefits of their labour in a country where unemployment and poverty are pervasive, particularly among the youth. The exhibition at His Majesty's birthday celebration underscored not only the beauty of their work but also the pressing need for support and infrastructure to enable these artists to flourish.
